Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammation in the colon which can cause pain, diarrhea and bleeding. At the Lexington Natural Health Center, we have found that it can be dramatically helped with dietary changes, probiotics and anti-inflammatory herbs. In ulcerative colitis, the immune system attacks the lining of the colon and causes damage. Some evidence suggests that certain foods and imbalances in the intestinal bacteria trigger the immune system to attack the colon. After these foods are identified and removed and the microbiome is rebalanced with the help of a comprehensive stool test, ulcerative colitis can go into remission. Unlike the current medications like Remicade, dietary therapy and gut microbiome rebalancing does not suppress the immune system or increase the risk of infections or cancer.
Ulcerative Colitis Patient Testimonials
"I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in May 2003. After meeting with Dr. Belanger in the fall, I began taking probiotics, fish oil, and psyllium. With his help I was able to get off prednisone, a steroid with harmful side effects. While I am still not 100%, I am doing so much better. Thank you for your help Dr. Belanger!" -JP
"I had been treated for ulcerative proctitis for 5+ years, by a medical doctor specializing in this diagnosis. When I became allergic to the prescribed medicine, he advanced me to a steroid which had no positive effect at all. The next step was a stronger steroid with potential serious side effects. My medical doctor (!) advised that I find a 'holistic doctor' before going with the stronger steroid. A friend recommended Dr. Braga. She and I analyzed my diet and she recommended specific changes. She prescribed specific vitamins and supplements to work with the dietary changes. She also mailed a letter to my medical doctor informing him of my new treatment. It took 2 years of continual improvement, but I have now been totally symptom free for one full year. Dr. Braga's patience, encouragement, and ability to reevaluate as I improved gave me the support to get where I am today. Thank you, Dr. Braga." KD
